Richthofen will perform THE CARDS YOU WERE DEALT, a corporeal intervention in which he explores the concepts of choice, transgenerational dialogue, and transformation through tattooing.
Seven participants will be randomly selected.
In the ongoing project, three texts are presented to the chosen participant. These texts are all accounts of 21st century phenomena. If the participant agrees to get one of the texts tattooed, they then get to choose three other texts for the following participant. The placement and composition of the text are decided collaboratively with the artist. The tattoos form a coherent text piece, a physical exquisite corpse, that is painted on a light box, echoing our individual but interconnected experience.
THE CARDS YOU WERE DEALT was first performed in September 2023 and most recently included in the 2023 Gallery Weekend Berlin.
You are invited to take part and submit your name at the gallery starting on Friday, February 16. The participants will be selected on Thursday, February 22, at 7 PM sharp and must be present and available to be tattooed over the course of the performance days.
The event and participation are free of charge.
We are also pleased to announce that Monty Richthofen will have a solo show with Neuer Aachener Kunstverein, 7. April–26. May 2024, and opening on Saturday, 6. April from 7–11 PM. The exhibition is titled THANK GOD GOD IS DEAD and includes paintings, text-based artworks, and a new immersive installation. It also marks the institutional premier of the sound and light installation If This Is You Who Am I, previously shown in CHEAP HEDONISM, his solo show with our gallery in 2023.

Richthofen wird eine Körperintervention mit dem Titel THE CARDS YOU WERE DEALT umsetzen, in der er den Ideen von Wahlfreiheit, Dialog über Generationsgrenzen hinweg und Verwandlung durch Tätowieren nachgeht.
Sieben Teilnehmer*innen werden zufällig ausgewählt.
In dem fortlaufenden Projekt werden der*dem ausgewählten Teilnehmer*in drei Texte vorgelegt, in welchen Phänomene des 21. Jahrhunderts verhandelt werden. Stimmt sie*er zu, sich einen der Texte tätowieren zu lassen, darf sie*er anschließend drei andere Texte für die*den nächsten Teilnehmer*in auswählen. Über die Anordnung und Gestaltung des Texts wird gemeinsam mit dem Künstler entschieden. Die Tattoos bilden eine auf einen Leuchtkasten gemalte zusammenhängende Textarbeit, einen körperlichen Cadavre exquis, der unser je eigenes und zugleich mit dem anderer verwobenes Erleben widerspiegelt.
THE CARDS YOU WERE DEALT wurde zuerst im September 2023 umgesetzt und war zuletzt Bestandteil des Gallery Weekend Berlin 2023.
Sie sind eingeladen, sich ab Freitag, 16. Februar in der Galerie als Teilnehmer*in anzumelden. Die Teilnehmer*innen werden am 22. Februar pünktlich um 19 Uhr ausgelost; sie müssen anwesend sein und für eine Tätowierung an den Performancetagen zur Verfügung stehen. Die Veranstaltung und die Teilnahme sind kostenlos.
Außerdem freuen wir uns, eine Einzelausstellung von Monty Richthofen im Neuen Aachener Kunstverein anzukündigen, die am 6. April von 19 bis 23 Uhr eröffnen und dann vom 7. April bis zum 26. Mai 2024 zu sehen sein wird. Die Schau mit dem Titel THANK GOD GOD IS DEAD umfasst Malerei, textbasierte Arbeiten und eine neue begehbare Installation und bringt das institutionelle Debüt der Klang-Licht-Installation If This Is You Who Am I, die zuvor 2023 in seiner Einzelausstellung CHEAP HEDONISM in unserer Galerie gezeigt wurde.
