DITTRICH & SCHLECHTRIEM will participate in The Armory Show, New York, September 8–11, 2023, with a presentation by KEITH BOADWEE as part of the curated SOLO sector, BOOTH S 17. Boadwee presents a diverse survey of recent oil on canvas paintings, from urinating frogs to smoking toilets to abstracted poodles and erect self-portraits. The dense, salon-style hanging covers the booth, and centers around new acrylic paintings from the historical action series, initiated in 1994.
Shown for the first time are Boadwee’s figurative emo-portraits of young people, with piercings, y2k-esque haircuts, and black nail polish, projecting timeless vulnerability and defiance.
Keith is a master of wrapping insidious grotesqueries in humor and a kind of aesthetic filigree—*fagginess* I want to say, that pretty pretty that’s just sickening: ruse and lure to the outsider to the invert (the WORLD lol, what’s that Hole song, “Credit in the Straight World”? yeah like that, sort of); mean fun gag to the insiders, dwellers within inversion.
The above excerpt is from the essay The Expense of Candy-Colored Spirit in the Anal Vortex of Time by David Rimanelli, and published in the recent gallery exhibition catalog, Spiritual Abstraction, 2022.
