DITTRICH & SCHLECHTRIEM is pleased to announce our second solo exhibition with MONTY RICHTHOFEN, titled SWALLOWED BULLETS, opening on Friday, February 7, 2025, 6–8 PM, and on view through March 22, 2025.
The exhibition features a new series of eleven text-based abstractions installed in a rhythmic procession along the walls of the main gallery space, with each work uniformly measuring 200 x 170 cm. It also includes a new series of works on paper, framed under tinted acrylic glass.
Richthofen’s latest body of work pushes the boundary between language and abstraction. Drawings and paintings incorporating text fragments—sometimes bold, sometimes illegible and obscure, blurred, sprayed over, or blacked out—reflect a tension between revelation and concealment.
The paintings form an integral part of the poem “Swallowed Bullets,” composed by Richthofen and incorporated into a live performance, on the occasion of the show’s opening. The audience is invited to engage with the poem as a multisensory experience. Its essence can be encountered both through the ephemeral, auditory immediacy of the live performance and the enduring presence of its abstracted words dispersed on the canvases throughout the exhibition space.

On the occasion of the exhibition, the gallery will publish an essay by Laura Helena Wurth in both German and English, available prior to the opening in February 2025.
Monty Richthofen (b. Munich, 1995) is a Berlin-based artist whose work challenges conventional poetry by visualizing text through painting, public writings, and tattooing. He studied performance practice and design at Central Saint Martins University of the Arts in London, graduating in 2018. In 2024, notable exhibitions included ECCENTRIC: Aesthetics of Freedom at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, Capsule at Luxembourg Art Week, and THANK GOD GOD IS DEAD at NAK Neuer Aachener Kunstverein.
DITTRICH & SCHLECHTRIEM freut sich, die zweite Einzelausstellung von MONTY RICHTHOFEN in der Galerie anzukündigen. SWALLOWED BULLETS eröffnet am Freitag, den 7. Februar 2025, 18–20 Uhr, und ist bis 22. März 2025 zu sehen.
Gezeigt wird eine neue Serie von elf textbasierten Abstraktionen, die in rhythmischer Abfolge an den Wänden des Hauptraums der Galerie gehängt sind; alle Arbeiten messen einheitlich 200 x 170 cm. Ergänzt werden sie durch eine neue Reihe von Arbeiten auf Papier, die unter getöntem Acrylglas gerahmt sind.
Richthofens jüngste Werkgruppe stellt die Grenze zwischen Sprache und Abstraktion in Frage. Zeichnungen und Malereien, in die Textfragmente – mal in kräftigen Lettern, mal unleserlich und undeutlich, verwischt, übersprüht oder geschwärzt – eingelassen sind, spiegeln eine Spannung zwischen Offenbarung und Verbergung wider.
Die Gemälde sind integraler Bestandteil von Richthofens Gedicht „Swallowed Bullets“. Anlässlich der Ausstellungseröffnung wird er den Text in eine Live-Performance einarbeiten. Die Besucher*innen sind eingeladen, sich auf das Gedicht als Erfahrung für mehrere Sinne einzulassen. Sein Gehalt begegnet ihnen sowohl in der flüchtigen akustischen Unmittelbarkeit der Live-Performance, als auch in der beständigen Gegenwart der abstrahierten Wörter, die über die Leinwände im Galerieraum verstreut sind.

Zur Ausstellung wird die Galerie einen Essay von Laura Helena Wurth in deutscher und englischer Fassung veröffentlichen, der vor der Eröffnung im Februar 2025 vorliegen wird.
Die Arbeiten des Künstlers Monty Richthofen (geb. 1995 in München, lebt in Berlin) hinterfragen dichterische Konventionen, indem sie Texte in Malerei, öffentlichen Schriftbildern und Tätowierungen visualisieren. Er studierte performative Praxis und Gestaltung an der Central Saint Martins University of the Arts in London, wo er 2018 seinen Abschluss machte. 2024 war seine Kunst in wichtigen Ausstellungen zu sehen, darunter ECCENTRIC: Ästhetik der Freiheit in der Pinakothek der Moderne in München, Capsule auf der Luxembourg Art Week und THANK GOD GOD IS DEAD im NAK Neuer Aachener Kunstverein.
