Berliner Luft, Nicola Martini and Jacopo Menzani
For our 10th installment of Berliner Luft, Dittrich & Schlechtriem is pleased to present a project by gallery artist Nicola Martini in collaboration with Jacopo Menzani. The unique photographic series is exhibited in our upstairs gallery space, from Monday, July 20th through Sunday, July 26th, 11 AM to 6 PM.
The project, developed in 2018, is a speculative investigation of physical matter through the “lens” of the photographic medium. In this way, it is a purposeful collaboration between sculptor Martini, whose work consistently contemplates the nature of materiality, and photographer Menzani. The artists build up complex compositions of materials from sand, resin, porcelain and plastics. Some scenarios are staged, cut and paste, against a flat saturated backdrop. In contrast, other photos are cropped detail views of accidental studio residue and spontaneous evidence of a multi-material artistic practice.
The abstract images explore a liminal space, a meeting point for the two artists and their differently informed perspectives on art and process. The images are at some points violent, conflicted, while others are harmonious and fluid. Aside from the principal focus on material, texture, color, form, a sense of real scale is disguised. Curiosity is the conceptual subject, as the viewer is provoked to examine something unknown and familiar at the same time.
Martini and Menzani use photography as both a tool for documentation and a language to construct a visual space. The surfaces portrayed refer to a sculptural object and its potentials. Photography and sculpture are then perceived in continuity, the characteristics of each medium influence and glorify each other.
Nicola Martini (b. Florence, Italy, 1984) lives and works in Milan. His solo show titled and welded skin is currently on view at Philipp Zollinger in Zurich. The artist will also be featured this August at ART Biesenthal 2020, an annual indoor and outdoor exhibition in the town of Biesenthal north of Berlin.
Jacopo Menzani (b. Florence, Italy, 1984) lives and works in Florence. Menzani runs Gianna Nunziati’s antiques and design gallery in Florence. In 2018, with Sasha Ribera, he opened [mòno], a twentieth-century design and decorative arts gallery in Milan. He also directs the design department at Pandolfini Auction House in Florence.
The gallery will be open this Sunday, July 26th, from 11 AM – 6 PM, as part of INDEX Berlin’s SUNDAY OPEN monthly event.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to view Jonas Wendelin’s solo show ONLY. The exhibition features an architectural installation, original Raku fired ceramics, and a collaborative newspaper publication that is free for visitors. ONLY engages the public in an alternative reality, setting up a futuristic narrative of idealism and leaving the viewer with hope in dystopia.

Dittrich & Schlechtriem freuen sich, in Folge 10 der Reihe Berliner Luft ein gemeinsames Projekt des von der Galerie vertretenen Künstlers Nicola Martini mit Jacopo Menzani vorzustellen. Die einzigartige fotografische Serie ist von Montag, 20. Juli bis Sonntag, 26. Juli jeweils von 11 bis 18 Uhr im oberen Galerieraum zu sehen.
Das 2018 entwickelte Projekt unternimmt eine spekulative Untersuchung von Materie durch die „Linse“ des fotografischen Mediums. Insofern stellt es eine zielgerichtete Zusammenarbeit zwischen Martini, in dessen skulpturalem Oeuvre das Wesen der Materialität im Mittelpunkt steht, und dem Fotografen Menzani dar. Die Künstler schaffen komplexe Kompositionen aus Sand, Harz, Porzellan und Plastik. Manche Szenarien sind wie mit Schere und Kleber vor einem flachen farbgesättigten Hintergrund angeordnet. Andere Bilder dagegen zeigen in engen Bildausschnitten zufällige Überreste im Atelier oder geben spontan entstandene Auskunft über eine materialreiche künstlerische Praxis.
Die abstrakten Bilder erkunden einen Zwischenraum, in dem die zwei Künstler und ihre verschieden geprägten Sichtweisen auf Kunst und Prozess sich begegnen. An manchen Stellen zeugen sie von Gewalt und Widerstreit; andere sind harmonisch und im Fluss. Das Hauptaugenmerk gilt Material, Textur, Farbe und Form, während der Maßstab des Gezeigten verschleiert wird. Konzeptuelles Thema ist die Neugier selbst: Die Betrachter werden angeregt, sich mit etwas Unbekanntem und doch Vertrautem zu befassen.
Martini und Menzani setzen Fotografie als dokumentarisches Werkzeug und zugleich als Sprache ein, die einen visuellen Raum erschafft. Die porträtierten Oberflächen verweisen auf ein skulpturales Objekt und seine Potenziale. So werden Fotografie und Skulptur als bruchlos ineinander übergehende Medien erkennbar, die mit ihren je eigenen Qualitäten das jeweils andere beeinflussen und steigern.
Nicola Martini (geb. 1984 in Florenz) lebt und arbeitet in Mailand. Seine Einzelausstellung mit dem Titel and welded skin ist derzeit bei Philipp Zollinger in Zürich zu sehen. Im August wird er an der ART Biesenthal 2020, einer jährlich stattfindenden Ausstellung im Innen- und Außenraum in Biesenthal nördlich von Berlin, teilnehmen.
Jacopo Menzani (geb. 1984 in Florenz) lebt und arbeitet in Florenz. Menzani leitet Gianna Nunziatis Antiquitäten- und Designgalerie in Florenz. 2018 eröffnete mit Sasha Ribera [mòno], eine Galerie für Design und Kunstgewerbe des 20. Jahrhunderts in Mailand. Außerdem leitet er die Designabteilung des Auktionshauses Pandolfini in Florenz.
Diesen Sonntag, 26. Juli, wird die Galerie im Rahmen des monatlich von INDEX Berlin veranstalteten SUNDAY OPEN von 11 bis 18 Uhr geöffnet sein.
Nach wie vor ist in der Galerie Jonas Wendelins Einzelausstellung ONLY mit einer Architekturinstallation, originalen nach Raku-Art gebrannten Keramiken und einer als Gemeinschaftsarbeit entstandenen Zeitung zu sehen, die kostenlos zum Mitnehmen aufliegt. ONLY versetzt die Besucher in eine alternative Wirklichkeit und erzählt die futuristische Geschichte eines Idealismus, der gerade in dystopischen Zeiten Hoffnung macht.
